Sean and I were out on a hike when we had to cross through a small swampy area, and he noticed several of the downed trees were an unusual species for the area. We were in a Fir forest, but had found Cherry and Birch stumps and logs. This piece came from one of the broken logs he found that day. He carried it over a mile out of the trail.

The dark lines and grooves in this bowl are bark inclusions. This section of the tree was in the root ball, so it grew in around itself.  You can also see a few small areas of burl. Burl is a round, knotty growth in a tree. The grain in a burl grows in a deformed shape, and forms little knots and swirls.
